Rebecca’s Bio:
‘As a professional theatre director for some years (since 2005), I have directed almost 70
shows (yes, I know! I’ve been busy), with a varied repertoire of mid-scale touring, rep
theatre at the Leatherhead Theatre, Open Air Theatre (for 10 years), Theatre In Education
(for White Horse Theatre - Europe's biggest T.I.E company), new writing, studio work, site-
specific and fringe shows. 5 years ago I began a journey to create my own work, as I wanted
the freedom to explore my own creativity.
I became interested in digital technology after an installation at Quad, by Japanese artists
Team Lab. Blown away by this, I wanted to explore how tech could advance storytelling in
theatres and how it could create a more immersive and impacting experience. I have a
sense that we can use digital technology to engage the next generation with theatre - using
familiar tech in their pockets to reach out and engage a new audience. Partnering with
Darius Powell, we have been exploring a variety of technologies and how they could be used
to enhance our experience of theatre.
During the pandemic I applied for and won, a UK Innovate grant to create the world's first
immersive theatre app - Inside Theatre - available on google and apple stores. I was keen to
use the 43K budget to employ as many theatre creatives as possible who were out of work
due to the pandemic. The app is a celebration of the work of 15 creatives across the tech
and theatre industries. I am currently building a series of workshops in coordination with
this.
